Hogenakal Smoking Rock: Hogenakkal is known for its smouldering waterfall. When the River Cauvery crosses the border from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, the river winds its way to plunge from an elevation of 700 m (2300ft) resulting in a magnificent spray, making it known as the Niagara of India. Hogenakal Falls gets its name from two Kannada words: ‘hoge’, which means smoke and ‘kal’ which means rock. These Carbonatite rocks found near the waterfall are some of the oldest in South East Asia.It is also referred to as Marikottayam by the people of Tamil Nadu.
A refreshing tourist destination, the scenery, coracle boat rides and medicinal baths, beckon. The source of the River Cauvery lies in the Brahmagiri Hills in the Western Ghats of South India. As it meanders, it gains momentum as the land drops in elevation. It becomes larger as various tributaries feed into it on the way down. By the time it reached Hogenakkal, the Cauvery, now a large river, drops and creates numerous waterfalls as the water cuts through the rocky terrain. In some places, the water falls as much as 20 m (66 ft) and sounds thunderous!
The falls have about 14 channels with drops varying between 15ft and 65 ft. To reach the surroundings of waterfalls one needs to take a boat-ride on a coracle. This is a saucer shaped boat, made of bamboo and hide. Circular in shape, it offers a fascinating ride. It is also allowed during the monsoon and winter season, unlike other boating activities, which are stopped during the monsoons.
The Government of Tamil Nadu made a proposal to convert the falls into providing drinking water for the state.
